Wamplers July 4th

With July 4th on the horizon, it is never too early to plan your holiday menu. Whether you are entertaining a crowd or just a few, any of these delicious recipes are right on track to light up your celebration like the night sky!

At Wampler’s we take taste seriously. Very seriously. That is why we have several flavors for each of our products. They are as individual and unique as America is in her people. We have worked hard in developing our line of hogs that represent what we hold dear to our company values. We take pride in our healthy stock, in their diet and their housing. We believe in being transparent and true to our calling for providing top quality, healthy pork products. We are achievers of the American Dream and celebrate this day!

Planning a menu for the day of a main dish, side and dessert (yes a sausage dessert) makes you hungry just thinking about it! White lightning and Apple Pie. What? Both are as American as baseball! What about these flavored sausages for the grill? Yes, please! Next, think sausage, potatoes and cheese. LOTS of cheese. Well, there’s your side! Finally, blueberry, strawberry and sausage. Stay with me for dessert! Wow! What a varied and mixed menu – just like the country they were born in!

Yes, White Lightnin’ and Apple Pie Moonshine Sausage. 2 amazing Moonshine flavors give you 2 different sausages for the grill. Or you can choose one of our 2 italian sausages. Just hearing the flavors (and yes real moonshine in them) makes a person ready for sausage on the grill and for a twist put them on bolillo rolls with grilled onions and hot mustard and you have a winner. Add coleslaw for a flavorful slaw dog. Add onions, chili, relish and the options go on and on. However you choose to present it, know that their flavor is steeped in Appalachian history of ‘shine or in the Italian heritage represented in this great country.

Wampler’s Sausage and Blueberry Cake

And finally, something sweet! With sausage? Yes, and it’s savory and hits the spot. Sausage and blueberries make a great combination. With the hint of apples and walnuts what more could you ask for? What’s fun for July 4th is adding some sliced strawberries once the cake is iced and a few more blueberries and you have a salute to the day being red, white and blue! Happy birthday America!

INGREDIENTS:

( Cake: )

  • 1 pound Wampler’s Farm All Natural Sausage

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

  • 1 cup white sugar

  • 2 large eggs, beaten

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  • 1 medium Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored, and grated

  • 3 cups All-Purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon ginger

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 cup Cattle Dog Coffee Roasters Guatemala Direct Trade brewed coffee, cooled

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries (if using frozen, do not thaw)

  • 1 cup toasted walnuts, roughly chopped

  • Icing:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • 3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream

  • ½ teaspoon maple extract

  • Strawberries sliced and blueberries for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Cake: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 10-inch bundt pan. In a large frying pan over medium heat, brown the sausage, breaking it up as you cook it, until no longer pink. Set aside to cool for a few minutes. Once the sausage has cooled, place it in a large bowl with the brown and white sugars. Stir until well blended. Add the eggs and grated apple and beat well. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, ginger, and cinnamon. In a small bowl, add the baking soda to the coffee. Add the flour mixture and the coffee mixture alternately to the sausage mixture, beating well after each addition. Fold in the blueberries and the walnuts. Pour the batter into the greased bundt pan, using a spatula to make sure it is evenly distributed in the pan. Bake at 350 degrees for about 60-65 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack for about 15 minutes before inverting onto the serving platter.

  2. Icing: While the cake is cooling, make the icing. In a medium-sized bowl whisk together the powdered sugar, cream, and maple extract. Whisk very well until it begins to thicken. Once the cake is cooled to just warm, drizzle the icing over the top of the cake. Place sliced strawberries and blueberries over the top to resemble a red and blue pattern. Serve warm or at room temperature. Refrigerate any leftovers.
